How to Connect Claude to Google Search Console (With an MCP Server)

Most SEO tools work the same way: you sign in, open a dashboard, and read a table. If you want to ask a question that isn't already a chart on the screen, you're exporting a CSV or copy-pasting numbers into a chat window by hand. MCP (Model Context Protocol) removes that step — it lets an AI assistant like Claude read your live Search Console and GA4 data directly, inside the conversation you're already having.

What MCP actually is, in plain terms

MCP is an open standard, originally built by Anthropic, for connecting an AI assistant to external tools and data sources. A tool or service exposes an MCP server; an AI assistant connects to it the same way you'd add any other integration. Once connected, the assistant can call specific, pre-defined actions — in TrafficGap's case, things like "get my ranked traffic gaps" or "scan this page" — rather than having blanket access to everything. You approve the connection once, and the assistant can keep using it in future conversations without you reconnecting each time.

The practical effect for SEO work: instead of opening a dashboard, filtering a date range, and reading a table, you just ask. The assistant fetches the real data, using the same read-only Google access as everything else, and answers in the conversation.

What this unlocks for SEO workflows

A few things change once your traffic data is something you can ask about rather than something you have to go look up:

  • Natural-language queries instead of exports. "What are my biggest traffic gaps this month?" gets you the same ranked, scored list the dashboard shows — without opening it.
  • Ask-and-fix in one pass. You can ask for the priority list, then immediately ask Claude to scan a specific page from that list and get concrete action steps, all in the same conversation.
  • Quick checks without context-switching. "How many scans do I have left this month?" is a fifteen-second question that would otherwise mean opening a tab, signing in, and navigating to usage settings.
  • It composes with everything else you're already doing in Claude. If you're drafting a content brief or a page rewrite in the same conversation, the traffic data backing that decision is one message away instead of a separate workflow.

How to connect TrafficGap to Claude

  1. Sign in to TrafficGap and open your dashboard — you'll need this done once, the same Google sign-in used for the rest of the app.
  2. In the dashboard, find the Connect an AI assistant panel and copy the connector URL.
  3. In Claude, add it as a custom connector (desktop, web, or mobile — the setup screen is the same one used for any other MCP server).
  4. Claude will prompt you to sign in and approve the connection. The consent screen tells you exactly what access is being granted before anything happens.
  5. That's it — ask Claude about your traffic gaps in your next message.

Things you can ask once it's connected

  • "What are my biggest SEO traffic gaps right now?"
  • "Scan my pricing page and tell me what to fix."
  • "Which of my declining pages has the most impressions left?"
  • "How many scans do I have left this month?"

Each of these maps to the same scoring and analysis TrafficGap runs in the dashboard — see how to find traffic gaps in Google Search Console for what's actually happening behind a question like the first one, or how to prioritize which SEO pages to update first for the reasoning behind the ranking.

What about access and privacy?

The connection uses the same read-only Search Console and GA4 access as the rest of TrafficGap — it can't modify or delete anything in your Google accounts. You approve the specific access being granted on the consent screen before it's active, and you can revoke it at any time from your TrafficGap dashboard, which immediately cuts off access.
